Birth Story:

Tuesday morning, October 4th, I got up to go to the bathroom. When I sat down I felt on odd feeling on my lower left side of my belly and heard a ‘popping’ noise. Now, I thought ‘hmmmm did my water break?’ I got back in bed…it was 4:52 AM. As I laid back down I noticed being a bit crampy. Nothing too unusual. So, I watched the clock and noticed the cramps being about 12 minutes apart…not real consistent. At 6:00 AM, I woke Jamie up and told him to get his shower. I had a small bowl of cereal and turned on the news. The cramps were getting more intense. I jumped in the shower, washed my hair and got it all dry. Thought I should probably check in with the hospital. I called and told them what was going on. By this time the cramps were about 6 - 8 minutes apart and I was having to breathe through them a bit. The hospital didn’t have any rooms, but people would be leaving and they told me to come in. They would hook me up to the monitors and then move me if I was staying and when they had a room. Called my mom and got her over to the house to watch Max. Jamie and I headed to the hospital around 7:30. I checked in with reception and they got me back to an observation room to be monitored. When I sat down on the gurney, I felt my water break. Now, it may have officially broken at 4:52 AM, but that was the first I felt of it! It was 7:54 AM. My first exam was at 7:58 AM. The nurse asked ‘Are you planning on having an epidural’. I said ‘Yes!’. She said, ‘OK, because you are already dilated to a 7 or 8' (80% effaced). I said, ‘Can I still have one?’. She said, ‘Yes’. They put me in a gown and wheeled me to the ‘Holding Room’. I had another exam at 8:20 AM. I was still between a 7 and 8 and 90% effaced, 0 station. Still waiting for my epidural and really feeling a lot of pain. Kudos to those of you that go naturally!! They had also started my antibiotics for strep. They gave me a double whammy, knowing things were moving fast. My epidural was placed at 8:50 AM and at 9:05 AM I was complete. My doctor arrived and changed clothes, they prepared the holding room and after pushing through several contractions, Zeke Jackson arrived at 9:31 AM. Since the holding room has no warmer or other nursery equipment, I got to hold him for just a few minutes and then Jamie walked him next door to the nursery. He was 7 lbs, 5 oz and 20 inches long. I was moved to a room at about 12:30 PM and given a case of diapers for being such a good patient!
